Great Ways to Celebrate and Make Your Memorial Day Weekend Morris!

About Memorial Day

This year Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 27th, a day for families and friends to gather and celebrate the unofficial start of summer.  Many people will visit cemeteries and memorials to honor and mourn those who died while serving in the United States military and will place an American flag on their graves.

Memorial Day was first celebrated in 1868 when General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic called for a “Decoration Day.”  Until 1970, the holiday was always observed on May 30th. In 1971, Memorial Day was standardized on the last Monday of May along with the new name.

With inflation, rising gas prices, and continuing issues stemming from the pandemic, many leisure travelers will choose to stay close to home for the long Memorial Day weekend. What a perfect time for a Morris County visit or staycation.

Here’s our guide to top activities planned around Memorial Day so you can make your weekend Morris County!
