Wharton Canal Day

Wharton Canal Day

Wharton Canal Day

When workers abandoned the Morris Canal in the 1920s, they dismantled many locks and inclined planes but did not completely destroy them. For years, Lock 2 East lay buried. Then, the Borough of Wharton and the Canal Society of New Jersey teamed up to see if they could reconstruct it.

After years of hard work, they have carefully restored both the lock and the lock tender’s house. The lock now functions perfectly. Inside the house, historic displays and furnishings make it look like the lock tender and his family still live there. On this tour, we will walk along a water-filled section of the Morris Canal to visit this newly revived historic site.
