About the Shakespeare Theatre

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, now recognized as one of the nation’s premier classical theatres, began humbly as a summer-stock company in Cape May. In 1963, the Cape May Playhouse appointed actor and director Paul Barry as Artistic Director. That year, he staged The Taming of the Shrew, launching what would become the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival.

In 2003, the company rebranded as The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, strengthening its identity and national presence. During the 2000s, its educational programs flourished, both in number and geographic reach.

A standout initiative, Shakespeare LIVE!, started in 1997, grew to become the mid-Atlantic’s largest Shakespeare touring company for students. By 2008, it had reached over 700,000 young minds. That year also marked the Theatre’s first international program—ShakeFest in Athens, Greece.

Today, with more than a dozen programs for learners of all ages, the Theatre continues to inspire and educate, connecting timeless stories like Perseus and Medusa with new generations.
