Whippany, NJ –
On September 17, 2023, the Whippany Railway Museum, located at Route 10 West & Whippany Road in Whippany, will host its first “Steampunk Theme Train Rides” ! What is Steampunk ? It’s clothing, costumes, gadgets, and styles inspired by the Victorian-era and 19th-century industrial steam power… creating a retro-futuristic look and aesthetics. Lots of people enjoy dressing up in Victorian-style steampunk attire, such as vests, corsets, top hats and goggles, while others enjoy coming to see them.
What better place to host such an event than the Whippany Railway Museum, where visitors can explore and take pictures of themselves in front of our historic steam locomotive, No. 385 – built in 1907 – and our 1918 Railbus. Visitors can ride back in time onboard our beautifully restored mahogany-interiored premium club cars – the 1912 “Millionaire’s Express” Subscription Car, or our 1927 “Jersey Coast” Club Car. Passengers can also choose to have the fun of riding in one of our vintage cabooses. Also on the Museum property that day will be several Steampunk vendors, selling steampunk wear and souvenirs, while a Whippany Railway Museum kiosk will offer up antique lanterns, railroad hardware and other rail and transportation artifacts.
Train ride tickets include entrance to the Museum building, which houses an outstanding display of steam-era railroad and ocean liner memorabilia as well as an operating Lionel model train layout. The Museum’s railyard boasts an enjoyable collection of historic locomotives and rolling stock which visitors can go in, plus displays of maintenance-of-way handcars, antique coal conveyers and a variety of railroad signals and mile markers.
It is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance, online at: www.WhippanyRailwayMuseum.net which has ticket prices and more information. Train rides and Steampunk event are held Rain or Shine.
So, dress up in your finest Steampunk attire (though not required), and come enjoy seeing – and riding – the fascinating preserved artifacts from railroading’s past, and help support the all-volunteer, non-profit Whippany Railway Museum.
