The Folk Project – Rob Flax’s Boom Chick Trio with Don Sarlin

Rob Flax’s Boom Chick Trio with Don Sarlin

Rob Flax possesses a rare combination of skills: he is an award-winning violinist, classically trained but known for his jazz and improvisational pyrotechnics and irresistible grooves, plus a deep knowledge of American fiddle traditions. He’s also a powerhouse vocalist, capable of silky crooning a la Nat King Cole or visceral Chicago blues shouts, and a consummate songwriter with lyrical depth to complement the instrumental virtuosity.

Rob Flax’s Boom Chick Trio blends guitar, upright bass, and three-part vocals, adding intricate interplay, tight harmonies, and irreverent humor to his eclectic originals.

Rob Flax is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator whose musical talents know no bounds. From performing with icons like B.B. King and Tower of Power to collaborating with Jacob Collier and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Rob’s versatility shines across genres. As a composer, he’s contributed to film, choreography, and original projects. In his “One Man Band” shows, Rob uses a looper pedal to turn his violin into a symphony, accompanied by guitar, piano, and percussion. A New England Conservatory graduate, Rob aims to spread joy and light, inspired by Fred Rogers’ playful spirit.

Opening will be Don Sarlin, guitarist and songwriter, who began his musical career in his late teens and toured with Van Morrison, David Bromberg, Mary Travers, Esther Phillips, Dean Friedman and others.  He co-founded The TriSonics, an acoustic trio featuring guitar, dobro and bass, with three genre-jumping instrumental albums to date.  He likens his songs to screenplays, capturing characters, a plot, a place and a time, and performs memorable solo guitar instrumentals as well.  He’s also been known to share stories of his remarkable and occasionally terrifying adventures as a kid on the road. He is an exceptional guitarist performing captivating original tunes and memorable solo instrumentals.
