The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey

The Baroque Orchestra opens 2023-2024 season with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne – his very first opera – and works by Jean Jacques Rousseau and Johann Joachim Quantz.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was only twelve years old when he composed his first opera. Despite being so young, he created a work of great charm, beauty, and love. It is the story of two young people who almost lose each other and a village magician who sings the show-stopping aria!
The performance will feature soprano Timothy Maureen Cole, tenor Dmitri Zigrino, bass Jason Adamo, and BONJ regular Tom Loughman in a comprimario role.
Timothy Maureen Cole has sung with Eastern Opera and BONJ Opera and has performed at the National Opera Center in New York. She has sung major roles in L’Elisir d’amore, Acis and Galatea, La Boheme, and Die Fledermaus. She has also starred in productions of operas composed by Maestro Butts.
Jason Adamo has sung with Eastern Opera, Amore Opera, BONJ Opera and other companies. He has sung major roles in Don Giovanni, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme, and L’Elisir d’Amore. He recently sang the role of Inspector in The Tell-Tale Heart, composed by Maestro Butts.
Dmitri Zigrino has appeared with Eastern Opera and Opera Theatre of Montclair as well as with BONJ Opera. In addition to lead roles in Acis and Galatea, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme, Carmen, and other works, he has helped develop the choruses for operatic works.
Tom Loughman has performed comprimario roles with Eastern Opera and Opera at Florham, In Mid Air Productions, and BONJ Opera.
Bastien und Bastienne will be sung in English.
Mozart’s opera was inspired by Le divan du village, an opera by French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau. The orchestra will open the concert with a performance of Rousseau’s overture to his opera.Completing the program will be Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Johann Joachim Quantz, a major composer at the Prussian court of Frederick the Great in the mid-eighteenth century. BONJ principal flutist Laura Ferraro will perform the solo part. In past concerts, Laura has performed concertos by Mozart and Temelann. Laura is also an active performer with several chamber music ensembles.
