Franz Schubert – Unfinished Symphony

Felix Mendelssohn – Violin Concerto, Alyson Whelan, violin

Peter Jatvis – Concerto for Vibraphone and Orchestra, Jesse Gerbasi, vibraphone

Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn remain two of the most popular composers, with musicians and audiences alike.

Schubert’s Symphony #8 known as The Unfinished was composed in 1822.   Why he only wrote the first two movements has been the subject of much debate.  In any case, the two remaining movements represent what has been called “The first Romantic Era symphony.”  They are filled with intense moments contrasting with beautiful lyrical melodies.

Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is surely one of the most popular concertos. He began the work in 1839, completed it in 1844, and premiered it in 1845 to great acclaim. Since its premiere in Leipzig, it has been a standard work for every violinist and orchestra.

Peter Jarvis is a celebrated New Jersey percussionist and composer.  His Concerto for Vibraphone and Orchestra was composed especially for Jesse Gerbasi, BONJ percussionist, and for premiere by The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey.

Alyson Whelan, BONJ violinist, will be the soloist for Mendelssohn’s concerto.  With the orchestra, Alyson has previously played Mozart’s Violin Concerto #3 as well as Chevalier de Saint-Georges’s Sinfonia Concertante (with Aimee Briant) and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #2 (with Laura Ferraro, Dan Sagi, and Christian Carillo).  Alyson has also been featured in recent New Music concerts at The Madison Community Arts Center.

Jesse Gerbasi has been BONJ’s principal percussionist for the past 10 seasons. Patrons have hailed his playing as “wonderfully musical and expressive.”
