Mr. Salmon Goes To Washington
On November 22, 1899, the family of Congressman-elect Joshua S. Salmon gathered at his home on Division Street in Boonton, New Jersey, to celebrate his imminent journey to Washington, DC, for the opening session of the 56th Congress. In an atmosphere of excitement and pride, friends and family wished Mr. Salmon well on his new venture. As reported by a local newspaper, “All present wished the Congressman a pleasant time during his stay at Washington and expressed themselves satisfied that he would return as clean and upright a man as he has been in the past.” Also, the event marked a significant moment for Boonton as one of its own prepared to represent the town nationally.
Furthermore, 125 years later, the Boonton Historical Society invites the community to commemorate this milestone with a special anniversary reception at the BHS Museum.
