Morris Canal: 100 Years of Innovation

The Morris County Historical Society and the Morris County Heritage Commission proudly present Morris Canal: 100 Years of Innovation, a celebration of the rich and diverse history that makes Morris County so special. Join us for a series of 12 lectures exploring topics ranging from our area’s role in the American Revolution to early engineering marvels that forever transformed the landscape, as well as the local figures who shaped national history.

Stretching more than 100 miles and supporting Morris County’s booming iron industry for over a century, the Morris Canal earned worldwide recognition for its technological achievements. As it cut through New Jersey’s rugged highlands, the canal used a revolutionary system of 23 lift locks and 23 inclined planes to conquer an impressive elevation change of 1,674 feet. The canal’s famous water-powered inclined planes stood out as engineering marvels, raising and lowering canal boats up to 100 feet at a time. Join Canal of NJ Society President Joe Macasek as he reveals how this cutting-edge technology and hundreds of workers navigated New Jersey’s iron district, fueled the growth of towns such as Boonton and Rockaway, and moved millions of tons of goods across the state.
