Iconic: Kathleen Gilje Repaints Art History
November 21, 2025 – April 2026
The past stays close, even in the most innovative developments in visual art and culture. Artists often look to earlier works. Sometimes they do this to refine their technical skills, but more often they do it to test new ideas and spark inspiration. Kathleen Gilje, a New York–based painter (b. 1945), trained in Italy as a conservator and built her reputation through bold reinterpretations of Old Master paintings. Her career brings these approaches together in a compelling way.
Iconic: Kathleen Gilje Repaints Art History showcases the artist’s work and its relationship to the major art historical legacies of Leonardo da Vinci, Francisco Zurbaran, Gustave Courbet, and others.
