Friluftsliv: Finding Joy in All Seasons Through the Nordic Open Air Life Ethos

On Tuesday, January 23 at 7pm, the Mendham Township Library will host a Friluftsliv: Finding joy in All Seasons Through the Nordic Open Air Life Ethos with Tacy Quinn creator of Friluftsliving Family.

What is friluftsliv (pronounced “free-loofts-liv”)?  It’s the answer and antidote to winter blues and the weekly grind.  This Norwegian word translates literally as “free air life.”  It’s an ethos and a mindset and it’s easier to embrace than you think, even in New Jersey!

Join Tacy Quinn of Friluftsliving Family for an evening to learn how friluftsliv can bring joy in any season, no matter the weather.  We know spending time outside is beneficial, come and learn about some fresh ideas to make it easy and fun for the whole family or just yourself.  Participants will warm up with a delicious family glogg recipe and create a foraging-inspired pine scrub to capture the essence of the season to take home.

Tacy Quinn and her family are the creators of “Friluftsliving Family,” an Instagram account and growing community where they share ideas for outdoor adventures inspired by Tacy’s Norwegian roots and love of nature.  First created in fall 2020 as a way to bring light to some darker days during the pandemic, the family’s friluftsliv journey has been featured in an NPR “All Things Considered” December 2020 story, as well as in the recent book The Open-Air Life: Discover the Nordic Art of Friluftsliv and Embrace Nature Every Day by Linda Akeson McGurk.  

Friluftsliv became a way for Tacy and her family to pause, restore, and re-energize during stressful times.  They created a “15 Weeks of Friluftsliv” challenge to inspire friends and family to get outside, at least once a week, through that toughest of seasons: winter.  The adventure expanded in 2022 with a Raritan Headwaters Association collaboration to host gatherings to get families and friends outside for fun, friluftsliving activities from December through March.

This program will be held in the Brookside Community Church’s Scialla Hall at 8 East Main Street in Brookside, NJ.
