History Lunch Break: Frances Freeman Ray & Morristown’s Bethel Church with Rev. Dr. Sidney Williams

Join Rev. Dr. Sidney Williams for an exploration of Mother Frances Freeman Ray’s century of life and service. In 1841, under her leadership, several families left the Presbyterian Church of Morristown to form the Bethel Mite Society, later incorporated as the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church of Morristown.

The AME Church had been established in 1816 in order to escape discrimination that was found throughout society, including in the church. Standing by her faith through strength, Mother Ray held positions of respect and leadership within the community and church well before women were granted such rights, sacrificing four sons to the American Civil War and the fight for freedom for her people.
