Emblems of America

June 18-November 8, 2026

What images come to define a nation? Emblems of America explores the symbols that have shaped the American identity across generations, bringing together historic artifacts and contemporary artworks from the Morris Museum’s collection. Highlights include two hand-sewn American flags—a 13-star flag from 1777 and a 42-star flag from 1890—as well as objects connected to Morristown’s Revolutionary War history, including relics from Arnold’s Tavern, a gathering place for General George Washington and his officers during the Continental Army’s encampment nearby at Jockey Hollow.

The exhibition also examines how iconic American imagery continues to evolve through contemporary interpretation. A version of Gilbert Stuart’s renowned Washington portrait is presented alongside a vibrant reimagining by Walter John Rodriguez, while Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern’s Robe of Resilience reflects on the challenges, aspirations, and complexities of America in the twenty-first century. Together, these works invite visitors to consider how national symbols are preserved, reinterpreted, and continually reshaped over time.
