Black, White, and Yellow Taxis: Morris County and the Green Book
Join the Morris County Historical Society and the Morristown and Morris Township Library for Black, White, and Yellow Taxis: Morris County and The Green Book, a lecture by Janet W. Foster on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the Library’s Reference Wing.
First published in 1936 by a New Jersey postal worker, the “Negro Motorist Green Book” guided African-American travelers to welcoming businesses across the U.S., including New Jersey. The guide listed 581 businesses in 31 New Jersey towns, including Madison and Morristown, shedding light on a vital chapter of mid-20th-century history.
Janet W. Foster has spent two years researching New Jersey’s Green Book listings, uncovering important stories of African-American communities throughout the state.
We look forward to seeing you at this enlightening program, sponsored by the Morris County Historical Society, the Morristown and Morris Township Library, the New Jersey Historical Commission, and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
The program will be held at the Morristown and Morris Township Library, 1 Miller Road, Morristown. Free.
