Birds of Prey with the Avian Wildlife Center at the Mendham Township Library

On Tuesday, April 29th, at 7pm, the Mendham Township Library will present Birds of Prey with the Avian Wildlife Center.

Birds of Prey Program

Join Giselle Chazotte Smisko of the Avian Wildlife Center as she presents one of the center’s award-winning natural history programs about Birds of Prey. Specifically, this program focuses on the hawks and owls at the Avian Wildlife Center. Attendees will experience looking eye-to-eye with LIVE birds of prey, like hawks and owls. Furthermore, they will observe how these birds move and react to their surroundings. Indeed, these creatures act as ambassadors for their species and lives. In addition, we will discuss their specialized adaptations, abilities, and the challenges they face in the wild through the individual stories of each hawk and owl. Therefore, Giselle hopes to provide a memorable encounter for all participants with these magnificent raptors.

About Giselle Chazotte Smisko

Giselle Chazotte Smisko is a naturalist, wildlife rehabilitator, and Master Bird Bander. Moreover, over the past four decades, she has taught a broad spectrum of natural history topics. For instance, she worked as an educator for various organizations. These include the Morris County Park Commission, Union County Department of Parks and Recreation, The Raptor Trust, Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, and the Avian Wildlife Center. Her bird knowledge comes from years of rehabilitating thousands of injured and young birds. Additionally, she conducted research on wild populations. In fact, this research was in cooperation with New Jersey’s Nongame and Endangered Species Program, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Bird Banding Laboratory. Currently, she directs the Avian Wildlife Center in Sussex County with the help of her husband John Smisko.

The Avian Wildlife Center’s Mission

Established in 1990, the Avian Wildlife Center promotes conservation of native birds. In addition, it established a wildlife rehabilitation facility to treat all species of wild birds with the goal of returning them healthy to the wild. To date, the Avian Wildlife Center has cared for thousands of birds. Furthermore, volunteer staff maintain a help line to provide answers to people’s questions about wildlife. Finally, they also conduct field research to better understand the needs of the birds and ways to promote their conservation.
