Annual Zavada Lecture | Concert and Conversation – Amikaeyla Gaston
Please join us for an evening with singer, activist, and force for change Amikaeyla Gaston. She’ll sing for us and then share her experiences about how music became her path of healing and activism.
Amikaeyla unlocked her self-expression and healing in an intensive care burn unit after a near-fatal hate crime. After being told she would never walk again, she discovered she could not only overcome fear but also become fearless through the healing power of music. His Holiness the Dalai Lama invited Amikaeyla to sing for him, and encouraged her to share her gift. Since then, Amikaeyla has traveled the world extensively as a cultural arts ambassador for the state department to promote healing and wellness through music, especially in regions of conflict. She’s brought music to Israel, Beirut, Amman, Damascus, Palestine, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
In 2022, she brought a cultural exchange program that celebrated Music of the Mississippi to the Mekong River in Thailand. Most recently, she sang for the Royal Family at a benefit for healing in Ukraine. A committed environmental activist, she is currently at work on a documentary film called Women Carry Water.
