The First Presbyterian Church of Hanover began in 1718 in Whippany. It is the oldest religious organization in Morris County. During the American Revolution, the church served as a hospital. It also became a burial ground for soldiers and smallpox victims. The current building dates to 1835. The churchyard, established in 1750, surrounds the church on three sides. Aaron Kitchell is buried here. He served on the Hanover Committee of Observation and acted as Commissioner of Forfeited Estates. He also served in the Provincial Congress of New Jersey and later spent twelve years in Congress as both senator and representative.
