An area near the Mt. Hope Iron Works served as a prisoner of war camp, housing mostly Hessian soldiers. The prisoners labored in the iron works.
After the war ended, the British came to collect the prisoners from the camp and return them to Europe. One captive, Leopold Zindle, refused to leave. Born 1758 in Essinger, Daun, Rheinland-Pfalz, the legend is Zindle dropped to his knees, held open his arms and begged the British to shoot him first, rather than force him to leave. Mr. Zindle remained in Morris County the rest of his life. He died in 1821 and is buried in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Rockaway.
Confined in the grounds of what is now Picatinny Arsenal is the Walton family burying grounds, which was locally known as the “Hessian Cemetery”. However, research to date fails to confirm Hessian soldiers are buried there.
