Description
“Old Sow” Beacon Cannon
A beacon cannon, nicknamed “Old Sow”, was strategically placed at Prospect Hill, situated somewhere between Springfield and Chatham. John Pike of the Essex County Militia, serving under Captain Horton, was manning the cannon when it accidentally discharged. Soldier Pike succumbed to his injuries on February 5, 1779. His burial location is unknown.
