Description

Morristown Baptist Church Cemetery Site

During the American Revolution, soldiers and citizens who died of disease were buried in this cemetery. The site remained active until at least 1833, when Revolutionary War veteran David Baker was laid to rest here. Over time, the Baptist cemetery faded from memory. Workers rediscovered it in 1875 while repairing the road.

The Dover Iron Era reported the find on October 30, 1875, quoting the Banner:

“On Monday last, a trench filled with human skeletons was discovered in the Baptist burying ground, Morristown, by parties engaged in grading. The theory is that they are the remains of those who died of small-pox during the time that church was used as a small-pox hospital in the Revolutionary war. It is an event that, happening on the eve of the Centennial, brings forcibly to mind one of the dark sides of the nation’s struggle.” — Banner

A follow-up article on November 27, 1875, described new findings:

“The Banner says that in the excavations made in the Morristown Baptist burying ground several old coins have been brought to light. Among them is a penny dated 1710. Brass buttons, no doubt from the uniforms of the Continental heroes laid there, are also found.”

Officials later moved the remains to Evergreen Cemetery in Morristown and erected a memorial to honor them.
