Joseph Morris House

Born in Whippany in 1732, Major Morris previously served in the French and Indian War. He raised the first company in Morris County in Whippany. A Captain in the Continental Army, he served under Col. Daniel Morgan's Rangers aka Morgan's Riflemen, Col. William Winds (1776), Col. Matthias Ogden 1st Regt. (1777).

Major Morris was shot in the head at the Battle of White Marsh, Pennsylvania on December 6, 1777, succumbing to wounds on January 5, 1778 at his home in Morristown. Major Morris is buried in the First Presbyterian Churchyard, Morristown. His home remains standing at the intersection of Whippany Road and Hanover Avenue in Whippany.
