John Russell was a wealthy merchant from Long Island who fled his property to escape British raids. He served as a minuteman in the Continental Army and appears in the Morristown Record Book as one of the town’s road overseers. When Russell died in 1782, he left his estate to his wife, Esther, and son, Isaac.
His other son, Caleb Russell, studied law under Robert Morris in New Brunswick and later became a prominent figure in Morristown. Caleb helped establish the town’s first library, academy, and newspaper, and served as a private in a Morris County unit during the Revolution.
