Job Loree, Jr. was born in Mendham Township on October 16, 1759, and enlisted in the fall of 1776. He served as a Private in the Morris County Militia, fighting in battles at Mud Rounds, Connecticut Farms, Springfield (arriving near the end), Aquakanock Bridge, DeHart’s Point, and Yorktown. In July 1781, he served as a teamster for the French Army.
In his 1832 pension application, Loree recalled an incident while standing guard in Elizabethtown. A man “dressed in frock and trousers” tried to pass without giving the countersign. Loree refused him passage, pricked him with his bayonet, and threatened to shoot if he attempted to escape. The man turned out to be General William Livingston, who later rewarded Loree with $2 for his loyalty.
After spending several years in New York, Loree returned to New Jersey, where he later testified for his pension. He died in Randolph Township on February 25, 1843, and was buried in Mt. Freedom Presbyterian Cemetery. His home still stands at 22 Washington Valley Road in Morristown.
