Description

Job Allen Sr. House Site

Job Allen Sr., father of soldier Captain Job Jr., worked as a carpenter and ran an iron forge on the Rockaway River. He also served on the Committee of Safety.

During the Revolution, 3 key committees were formed in the colonies designed to remove royal authority. The Committee of Safety: several tasks were undertaken by the members; keep the community informed of dangers, coordinate measures for the public good and to keep a watchful eye on loyalist activities. The Committee on Observation (or Inspection): initially formed to enforce a boycott on British goods, the war caused a swift shift of the committee into the raising of taxes and recruitment of troops. The Committee of Correspondence: responsible for communicating with citizens the latest developments in the legislature or the war efforts. By 1775, the committees had become counter governments, serving to regulate economies, political views, and the militia.
