This house operated as a smallpox hospital during the winter of 1777, when the Revolutionary Army camped at Loantaka. Many soldiers were treated here as the disease spread through the ranks. To the northwest of the house lies a reported mass burial site for the patients who died that winter, along with the home’s owner, James Brookfield.
