Dr. Jabez Campfield served as a surgeon for the Morris County Militia and the Continental Army. He was present at the battles of Springfield (first), Ash Swamp, Germantown, Brandywine, the Sullivan Expedition, Springfield (second), and Short Hills. He was discharged in 1783.
During the winter of 1779–1780, Dr. Campfield’s home billeted Surgeon General Dr. John Cochran and served as a medical supply house. It also hosted Elizabeth Schuyler during her courtship and engagement to Alexander Hamilton.
A longtime Morristown resident, Dr. Campfield applied for his pension there in 1818. He died in Morristown on May 20, 1820, and was buried in the First Presbyterian Churchyard. His home still stands at 5 Olyphant Place and now serves as headquarters for the Morristown Chapter of the D.A.R.
