Reports suggest that iron ore was mined at Hibernia as early as 1722, marking it as one of the earliest mining sites in the region. In 1765, Samuel Ford built the “Adventure Furnace,” later known as the Hibernia Furnace. During the Revolutionary War, the furnace produced shot and ordnance for the Continental Army. The site became an important source of iron and helped supply the American war effort at a critical time.
