Continental Storehouse Site

The Chatham Press, July 8, 1911 edition provides the approximate location for the storehouse. George O’Hara was born August 6, 1753, and was a carpenter by trade, he enlisted in the fall of 1775. He served as Private, Sergeant, Artificer, Dragoon in the Morris County Militia under Capt. Jacob Arnold's Light Horse, Capt. Lindsley, Capt. Kinney participated in the battles of Connecticut Farms, Springfield, Bound Brook, Ash Swamp, Millstone, and Short Hills. While participating in the Northern Campaign to Canada, Private O’Hara contracted a severe case of smallpox, bearing the smallpox scars the rest of his life. His wife, Elizabeth Coleman, testified for a pension, recounted "his face always after showed the mask of it."

As an artificer, he was involved in constructing boats, huts, and bridges. A resident of Morristown, Mr. O’Hara was the proprietor of a tavern on the site of the old Continental stores. Mr. O’Hara died October 30, 1806, and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Morristown.
