Description

Continental Army Bake Ovens Site

On July 6, 1781, the Comte de Rochambeau and his 5700 French troops met up with General Washington and his 4000 troops at Philipsburg, New York. On August 18, the armies headed south. After crossing the Hudson River at King’s Ferry, the armies divided into three columns and followed separate routes through New Jersey. This tactic served to obscure the true size of the combined army. General Washington and his troops were marching directly towards Chatham. Sending soldiers ahead to prepare, part of the preparations included constructing bread ovens.
