During the Revolution, the Canfield homestead furnished food and lodgings for some of Washington’s officers and troops. The property was sold in the 19th century to Moses D. Ward, whose son Leslie, founder of the Prudential Insurance Company, was born here. Although the house is not on its original site, Crescent Road was also a pre-Revolutionary thoroughfare.
