Over $15 Million in Awards Recommended for Heritage Tourism

The New Jersey Historic Trust (NJHT), an affiliate of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), today approved a total of $15,227,208 in grant recommendations from the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund to save and promote historic sites throughout the state. Seventy-seven municipal, county, and regional planning, heritage tourism, and capital projects are included in this year’s list of recommendations. Among the recommendations is $2,250,000 for the next phase of funding for three previously awarded multi-year projects.

“New Jersey’s historic sites tell the story of who we are, from the Revolution to the present day,” said DCA Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez. “These grants help communities repair buildings, plan for their future, and welcome more visitors through their doors. When we invest in these places, we protect our history and strengthen the towns that care for it. We’re proud to support the Historic Trust and the local partners who keep this work going.”

Of the 74 new grant award recommendations, 33 will help fund a variety of preservation planning projects such as condition assessments, preservation plans, archaeological investigations, and construction documents; three will help fund intensive-level architectural surveys, a historic preservation element for a master plan and a county-wide preservation plan for historic cemeteries; two will help fund heritage tourism initiatives to improve the visitor experience at historic sites; and 36 will fund capital preservation projects on sites listed in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. All grants awarded are to nonprofit organizations or entities of municipal, county and state governments and require a match from the recipient.
