The Alaya Project

The Alaya Project bridges the intricate beauty of Carnatic Indian classical music with the energy of jazz and funk. Formed in Oakland, California, the group creates a sound shaped by two decades of friendship, dialogue, and cross-genre exploration. Their music blends soulful Ragas and melodies on saxophone by Prasant Radhakrishnan, the rhythmic power of drummer and Indian percussionist Rohan Krishnamurthy, and the rich harmonic textures of keyboardist Colin Hogan.

Together, they represent a seamless fusion of tradition and innovation. The result is a soundscape that constantly evolves while remaining grounded in cultural depth. Listeners are taken on a journey through layered rhythms, melodic improvisations, and dynamic grooves that transcend borders.

Back Deck Visitor Information and Guidelines

Attendees must bring their own chairs and are welcome to bring refreshments. Tickets are $63 for an 8’x8’ block (up to two patrons) or $33 for a block that accommodates one. A $3 handling fee is included in the ticket price. Concerts begin at 7:30 PM, and guests may arrive starting at 6:30 PM to enjoy picnics before the performance.

About the Back Deck

Since its debut in July 2020, the Back Deck concert series has hosted over 72 performances, attracting more than 11,000 guests. It has earned praise from local and national media for presenting critically acclaimed artists in an intimate outdoor setting. The venue—an elevated parking deck at the Museum—has become a beloved summer destination known for its stylish tailgate atmosphere and high-caliber music.
